The Pilgrims and their journey to the New World

After reading the information about the Pilgrims today, discuss your thinking.  Here are some ideas... What questions do you have?  What might have surprised you?  What did you learn today that you didn't know before? How are the Pilgrims similar or different from the settlers in Jamestown?
I can't wait to see what you all have to say!

Here is a Scholastic site for further research:  Scholastic site for Plimouth research

  1. I learned that in England whatever the King said was law. Some thought differently that they wanted to worship in their own way. The people who didn't follow the law were called Separastists and they were treated very badly.

  5. I was surprised most when I read that only one person died on the Mayflower. You would think that more people would die because of hunger, seasickness, and diseases. Because of that I was very surprised.

  7. I was surprised when it said that king James refused to grant the Separatists a charter. Also he didn't want the Separatists(pilgrims) to practice their own religion there, so the deal with the Virginia Company fell apart.

  10. One question I have is why was the king so bad and mean to all the people? one thing that surprised me was that the pilgrims almost starve why didn't they bring more food on their voyage.one way that the Jamestown people are the same as the pilgrims is in both the pilgrims and the Jamestown people had Indians help them. and one way they are different is the pilgrims tried to keep peace with the Indians and the Jamestown people did not.

  11. Pilgrims are separatists that want to have their religion instead of going to the church of England. The pilgrims asked the Virginia Company to pay for their voyage to America but King James turned them down. So the pilgrims asked some adventurer Merchants to pay for their voyage and it was a success. So the Mayflower and the Speedwell went for the journey to the new world but the speedwell had to turn around for repairs. So the Mayflower set off for the journey to the new world. On the Mayflower the men on the ship made a compact called the Mayflower Compact to set laws for the pilgrims and the strangers. On the coast of cape cod there was a storm that sent them zooming to Massachusetts instead of Jamestown.

  22. The difference between Jamestown settlers and the Pilgrims is that Jamestown settlers wanted gold, silver, a passage to China and India, basically anything that would make money. The Pilgrims went to the new world to worship in their own way.
